Notes from Rosemary McLennan (Editor of Upper Hutt Leader) who wrote the book Glimpses into early Normandale.
According to Lower Hutt Past and Present by Lance Hall (published 1941 for the city centenary) "Mr W Ellerm approached the education board in 1872 and recommended that a school should be opened at Belmont, as there were 27 pupils who could attend. Four years later Miss Stevens was appointed in charge of a 'half-time' school, but owing to a lack of support it was closed in September 1877."
Mr Ellerm is on the map in my book as the owner of section 129 at the same time as William Golder owned sections 426 and 306 and G Hart section 301. Given where he lived, if it were to serve his area, it could not be at today's Belmont. Section 129 was to the south of section 301 and separated from it only by section 300.
The 1911 opening of Normandale School mentioned an earlier school in an old whare not far away. Normandale School is now the playcentre on the corner of Poto and Normandale Roads.
It would be logical that any such school would be somewhere on today’s Normandale Road.
