1. William Golder (1810 - 1876)

William was born 1 on 4 Mar 1810 in Avondale, Lanark, Scotland. He was christened 2 on 11 Mar 1810 in Abbey (Paisley), Renfrew, Scotland. He died on 20 Jun 1876 in Govan, Scotland. He was buried in Strathaven Church Yard, Lanark, Scotland. William was employed as a Schoolmaster, Weaver and Poet.


When Williams wife, Mary changed to be a catholic he lost his position as schoolmaster in Scotland.

On the 30th October 1939 William and his wife Mary emmigrated from Glasgow, Scotland to New Zealand on the ship "Bengal Merchant". It arrived at Port Nicholson in March 1840. They settled in Belmont, Lower Hutt.


The ship left Scotland at 1pm it contained the following

Cabin: 12 males, 3 females, 2 children, Total = 17

Intermediate Cabin: 12 males, 4 females, 8 children , Total = 24

Sterrage: 70 married couples, 25 children, 33 single men, 12 single women , Total = 210............. Grand total= 251


Extracts from his son John Golder’s diary

William’s wife Mary had died on 14 Sept 1868 so he chose to return to Scotland leaving Wellington in the ship St Lenards. He did not get away until the 5th February 1876 and he arrived in London on 20 May 1876. Went to Jarrow where he got to meet his brother Quintin on the 23rd and then on to Straven with brother Matthew on 31st and posted a letter back to me in New Zealand on 6th June 1876. He died suddenly on the 20th June at brother Robert’s place in Govan aged 66. I got word of his death on 18 August and wrote a letter to uncles Quintin and Robert on 25th giving instructions to them what to do with his effects. On the 15th Sept I got a letter from uncle Robert giving the particulars of fathers death." - see below for actual letter


"....died at 4 am on Tuesday 20 June 1876 - he had a very sore truble in the heart and chest and a very great cough x spit - he was much worse 2 days before he died......" - extract from letter from Robert Golder to Mary Golder dated 20 August 1876


He is buried with his brother "James" in Strathaven Old Cemetery, Scotland. Headstone was erected by his family from New Zealand.

Information from the National Library

Arrived in Port Nicholson on ’Bengal Merchant’ in 1840, from Scotland. Credited with being the author of the first published poetry in New Zealand and the first amateur printer who was not a missionary. He had published one volume of poetry before leaving Scotland, and published four more in New Zealand. His mother Jessie married a Andrew Hamilton in 1880 but birth certificate shows it as :- Robert Spiers or Golder - illegitmate - signed Jessie Golder mother ( James Golder - Jessie’s husband had died on 28 April 1875 a pauper according to Robert’s birth certificate ).

William was born1 in 1880 in Avondale, Lanark, Scotland.


Death

William died 2 on 7 Aug 1880 in Avondale, Lanark, Scotland. His mother Jessie married Andrew Hamilton in 1880 but birth certificate shows child name as William Speirs or Golder - illegitmate but signature of Jessie Hamilton - mother. Died at 3 months after sufferring diarrhoea for 4 days.
