William Golder of Grange is the son of William Golder of Grange. He was born on 16 February 1767 and his baptism was registered at Avondale in Lanarkshire. Scotland Births and Baptisms His mother’s name is not mentioned in his baptismal record but it is supposed that he was a son of Marion Semple who married his father in 1765 Scotland Marriages. It cannot be regarded as certain but is seems quite likely, probable even, that he was named after his paternal grandfather William Golder in Quarter
Parish records identify two primary families in this timeframe - William Goldart and Quintine Goldart. Each of these families produced a William Goldart.
William, son of Quintine Goldart, was born on March 28, 1765 and he married an Elizabeth Mickle on 5 Feb 1764 thus this William was born 11 months after the date of marriage. Their second child Robert was born on 3 Oct 1766.
William, son of William Goldart, was christened on February 16, 1767 and is the assumed ancestor based on the marriage record of his father William Goldart to Marion Semple on November 3, 1765. Assumption being they had the son 14 months after their marriage and not 8 months before. Marion Semple had been identified as an ancestor by earlier family members.

James Golder - Soldier and Cotton Hand Loom Weaver
James Golder is the fourth son and youngest child of William Golder of Grange and his wife Marion Semple He was born in about 1778, probably at Grange Farm in Avondale, Lanarkshire, Scotland.
Military Service
James Golder joined the British Army. He was stationed at Paisley in Renfrewshire when he married Janet Gardiner in 1809. When he was posted abroad his wife went with him, and he was serving in Northern Germany when his son James was born at Lubeck there on 14 March 1814. [National Records of Scotland, Avondale Births and Baptisms, reference OPR.621/2]. He gained the rank of Sergeant and was for a time, prior to his retirement, stationed at Edinburgh Castle. His son Robert was born at Edinburgh Castle on 27 May 1816 but James may have been discharged from the British Army before 1 August 1818, the date upon which his son Matthew was born at Avondale. Home from Germany when Napoleon escaped from Elba.
Note provided by another family member : -"My uncle Quentin gave me a family tree years ago, but to me it was just a list of names and dates. He told me that Sgt.James Golder was in the 93rd.regiment, he served in the Peninsular war, was at the Battle of Corunna, and was a drill Sgt. at Edinburugh Castle."
