Story about The Radicles which William was part of........

He may have left in 1820 as he was one of the radicals and in doing so escaped punishment -
read the following :-

"The weavers of Strathaven were only a minority of the association known as Radicals. On 27th April, 1815, they held a meeting in the Relief Church (now the East Parish Church), Strathaven, to effect ways and means to repeal the unjust Corn Laws. When it had adjourned, the men went to Wilson’s house to seek his valued advice and opinion on whether or not they should raise the Strathaven Radicals.

The next five years saw discontentment soaring with the cost of living and James Wilson’s house became a frequent rendezvous for fellow weavers and other Radicals. Two men, Robertson and Stevenson (a blood relative of the famous author, Robert Louis Stevenson), emerged from the Strathaven Radicals to become prominent leaders of its militant faction. James Wilson, although a principal representative of Radicalism in Strathaven, favoured a more passive approach to the situation.

During this period there had been many gatherings with ineffectual results until finally on Monday evening, April 2nd, 1820, Robertson and Stevenson poured some lively rhetoric into the smouldering convention at Threestanes Farm. Decisions reached that night would change the course of many lives.

Refer to the website for more information about what happened to them - GREAT STORY !!!!:- Open in new window The Radicals

William was married to a Helen Wilson and they had children born between 1823 and 1828. This means he must have returned at some stage. Helen’s father was James Wilson - the person who was claimed to be the leader of the radicals. It is a "must" read the story.

Have since found another article which may exclude any link to this Wilson. "...........James Wilson’s son also named James Wilson - born in 1801 is found in the census of 1841 then aged 40 - living in Kirk Street Strathaven with his mother Helen then 70 and his daughter Janet aged 9 years. Other children of the Radical and his wife born in the parish of Avondale were Robert born on July 3rd 1804, Thomas born on July 13th 1797, William born on 15th February 1800 and Lilly christened on 4th April 1790. These people are mentioned as previous writers erronously believed that Wilson had only one daughter. Lilly (Lilias) Wilson’s marriage to John Walters in Muirkirk is found in the Avondale parish registers dated 12th July 1807...................

Grace subsequently remarried to John Marshall and was living in Carluke at the 1881 census with the two children from her first marriage and three children from her second marriage. Two of her children, Anne and Janet, immigrated to the United States in 1881 that may indicate that she and John Marshall immigrated at the same time. Archibald Waddell

Archibald was born in Carluke in May 1850 and is characterized as a "sawmiller" in the August 24, 1877 parish entry for the birth of his daughter, Marion Golder Waddell, in Carluke, Scotland. He and his wife, Elizabeth Marshall Waddell, and their family left Lanarkshire at somepoint following the birth of their son Robert on July 4, 1879 and were not in Carluke for the 1881 census. The family completed their immigration to New York in 1881 prior to the birth of their daughter Margaret Gilchrist Waddell on February 12, 1882 in Troy.

Archibald and his family were still in Troy for the birth of their daughter Jessie on February 1, 1885 but had moved to Aberdeen, South Dakota prior to the birth of James on April 24, 1887. Archibald was issued a Certificate of Naturalization in Aberdeen (Brown County), South Dakota on September 28, 1889 affirming that he had been in the U.S. for more than five years and in South Dakota for more than one year. After a disasterous effort at farming for several years, he returned to Troy, New York by 1891 and was living on Mechanic Street where his young son Marshall died. Archibald worked as an engine tender at the Burden Ironworks (noted for iron production and providing iron horseshoes to the Federal government during the Civil War).

He was living adjacent to the Ironworks at 468 First Street in Troy for the 1900 census and may have been living at 461 First Street on May 31, 1901 as evidenced by a letter from Alston and Orr, Solicitors. Archibald and his family had moved and were living at 542 First Street by 1910 and his widowed daughter Marion Golder Waddell Davies and her daughters returned from Virginia and joined them there in 1918.

The annual Troy Directory (for years 1919 to 1926) describes Archibald as an "engineer" and lists boarders in the household as James A. Waddell, Margaret G. Waddell, and Annie M. Waddell (1922-1924). Archibald was an Elder of Woodside Presbyterian Church and executed his last Will in Troy on February 26, 1921. He had lived in Troy for 43 years and was maintaining his residence at 542 First Street when he died of a cerebral hemorrhage in 1925.

Archibald is buried in the Waddell family plot of Oakwood Cemetery (Section C-1), Troy, New York and his tombstone is inscribed "Archibald Waddell 1850-1925".
