Bertran was born at 7.15pm on 14 Aug 1887 in Upper Hutt, New Zealand. Bertran was employed as a Dairy Farmer. Bertran and his wife Mary settled on a farm in Kakariki, Wairarapa, New Zealand. Six of their nine children were born here. In 1920 they bought another farm in Papatawa, Southern Hawkes Bay, NZ where they farmed until 1957. They retired in Woodville, NZ

Bertran married Mary Gertrude (Ciss) Quillinan (1885 - 1969) daughter of Matthew Quillinan and Mary O’Shaunessey on 27 Apr 1909. Mary was born on 27 Apr 1885. Resided in Kakariki, Papatawa and Woodville, NZ. Celebrated their diamond wedding in 1969. Not long after, Mary died and Bertran’s daughter Agnes looked after him until he died
