1. John Gerard Golder (1918 - 1982)
( ancestors Francis, John, William, James, William, William, William, William, ??? )
John was born on 21 Mar 1918 in Taihape, New Zealand. John was employed as a Racing Journalist.
John’s mother died when he was young and he was raised at Golders cottage by his fathers sister Teresa.
At the time of his death the following article appeared in the local newspaper "The Dominion"
John Golder was highly respected - by Barry O’Reilly
The death occurred in Wellington yesterday of Mr John Gerard ("Musket") Golder, a former racing journalist for many years with the "Dominion" and, at the time of his death, the editor of the "New Zealand Racing Calendar".
During his time of active race reporting John Golder was one of the best known and most respected racing journalists in New Zealand.
He was a member of a Hutt Valley pioneer family and was educated at St Patrick's College, Silverstream, near where he lived.
Mr Golder started his racing career with the late Stan McEwen on the "Sporting Life and Referee" but shortly after (and I suspect under age) he volunteered for war service and joined 27 (Machine Gun) Battalion. When Bardia fell in 1941 Mr Golder became a prisioner of war, but for only six weeks, and he resumed fighting in Italy.
On his return to New Zealand Mr Golder resumed his career with the "Dominion" again with Mr McEwen ("St Simon") and shortly, after the latter's retirement, left to rejoin the "Racing Calendar".
This weekly journal was then published by A B D (Bret) Clark and, when after the death of Mr Clark it was taken over by INL Print, Mr Golder remained editor.
A famililiar figure on racetracks throughtout New Zealand, particularly in the central districts and especially at Trentham, he became friend and confidante to trainers, owners and jockeys, not only from Trentham where large and powerful teams were trained, but also from all parts of New Zealand.
Another part of his duties covered judging and comentating for a number of clubs in the Wairarapa and Taranaki.
Latterly with Mr Golder's recent work requiring less immediate reporting, his visits to the racecourse and the training tracks were relaxed but his love of the sport remained and he raced in partnership several horses, the most recent being Dakait, a Woodville winner two weeks ago.
Mr Golder also had a great love for and deep knowledge of rugby, one of his closest friends being All Black Manager Mr Pat Gill, who was also one of his racing partners.
